We find where motion is being guarded.
For the knots that stretching, foam rolling, and time alone never touch: a precise release you can feel before you leave the room.
What It Is
When a joint or muscle has been guarded for a while, whether from an old injury or months of compensating, your body starts protecting it on its own. That guarding is often the real reason motion won’t come back by itself.
Manual therapy is skilled, hands-on work: joint mobilization to restore glide, myofascial and soft-tissue mobilization to release bound-up tissue, neuromuscular re-education to reteach the muscle how to fire, and manual traction to create space where there isn’t enough. Your physical therapist chooses the combination your body needs that day.
It’s rarely one technique in isolation. Wherever you are in your plan, Pain, Prime, Perform, or Prevent, hands-on work is often what unlocks the range everything else builds on.
Always optional, always explained first
What It Helps
If a joint has felt guarded for months, hands-on techniques often reach what stretching alone can’t.
What A Session Looks Like
1
We find where motion is being guarded.
2
Hands-on work releases it, joint by joint.
3
We test the new range and put it to work.
Why It Works
Restores motion your body’s been guarding.
Reaches tissue exercise alone can’t.
Retrains the muscle to fire correctly again.
Fits the plan you’re already on.

Questions, Answered
You might feel pressure or a stretch in a guarded area, but it shouldn’t be sharp pain. Your physical therapist works within what your body can handle that day and checks in as they go. Nothing happens without you knowing what to expect first, and it’s always optional.
Massage generally works soft tissue for relaxation and circulation. Manual therapy is a targeted clinical technique: your physical therapist is restoring motion in a specific joint or muscle based on what your evaluation found, then building your plan around it.
It depends on how long the area’s been guarded and how it responds to the first few sessions. Most people feel a real difference in range within the first two or three visits. We’ll map out what to expect for you specifically. Questions before then? Call us at (910) 239-7834.
